ECO-SEAROUTES is calling on local stakeholders across nine Mediterranean pilot areas to help build a network of actors committed to enhancing the cultural and environmental heritage of lesser-known coastal areas and inland destinations.
Why We Need You
Mediterranean ports face a persistent challenge: seasonal overcrowding strains infrastructure, damages fragile ecosystems and concentrates economic benefits in narrow coastal zones—while nearby inland areas with rich cultural heritage remain overlooked and economically marginalized.
ECO-SEAROUTES addresses this imbalance by developing a participatory model of sustainable maritime tourism. But this model cannot be designed from the outside. It requires local knowledge, territorial expertise, and the direct involvement of communities who know these places best.
A Transnational Network for Sustainable Tourism
The project brings together 10 partners from 7 Mediterranean countries – Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Montenegro, Cyprus, and Slovenia – to create a transnational network of sustainable ports and marinas.
Through the engagement of over 100 local stakeholders, ECO-SEAROUTES will deliver three integrated solutions:
- A strategic framework for sustainable port management connecting Mediterranean marinas through shared environmental standards
- Nine cultural itineraries (ECO-SEAROUTES Itineraries) that move beyond mass tourism circuits, linking coastal areas with inland destinations through co-designed routes
- Nine Community Heritage Hubs (CHHs)—interactive spaces where local communities present their heritage and guide visitors toward sustainable tourism experiences
Who We’re Looking ForWe are recruiting stakeholders in the nine pilot areas, including:
Participants will work alongside local, national, and international experts to develop routes that connect marinas with inland cultural and natural heritage sites, and contribute to establishing Community Heritage Hubs that serve as gateways for visitors and knowledge exchange platforms for communities. |
What You Gain
Participation is voluntary and without financial compensation. However, stakeholders will benefit from expert-led capacity building on sustainable tourism, circular economy and coastal heritage protection, while directly contributing to shaping territorial tourism strategies. Participants will have access to project materials, organizational support, and logistical assistance throughout the process. Their involvement will be recognized through inclusion in ECO-SEAROUTES communication activities and transnational Mediterranean networks, providing enhanced visibility, networking opportunities, and potential economic benefits through integration into internationally promoted sustainable itineraries.
