ECO-SEAROUTES Partners Gather in Selinunte to Build Strategic Framework

20/04/2026

The ECO-SEAROUTES partnership concluded its first transnational workshop in Selinunte, Sicily, on [date]. Hosted by The Phoenicians’ Route, the two-day event brought together project partners and local stakeholders to test and adapt the “Smart Way” methodology for eco-nautical routes across the Mediterranean.

The Smart Way approach, successfully developed by The Phoenicians’ Route and its European partners, creates paths of excellence that connect heritage, communities, and services while enhancing quality standards across entire tourism supply chains.
Day one focused on Selinunte’s cultural and natural heritage management strategies, followed by partner presentations of best practices in circular economy, waste management, and community-driven environmental protection. These examples formed the foundation for discussions on building common ground rules for the ECO-SEA-ROUTE—the transnational network connecting sustainable Mediterranean ports.

The second day concentrated on re-elaborating these discussions into a concrete strategic framework for the ECO-SEAROUTES strategy. An interactive afternoon session brought all participants together for knowledge exchange, illustrating the best practices identification and collection process developed during the workshop.
Partners also began drafting preliminary action plans for the project’s next phases: co-designing local eco-tourism itineraries (WP2) and establishing Community Heritage Hubs (WP3) across the ten pilot areas.
