ECO-SEAROUTES Contributes to Institutionalizing Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism in the Mediterranean

ECO-SEAROUTES participated in the first hands-on meeting of the MED Cluster Nature and Biodiversity, organized within the Interreg Euro-MED Sustainable Tourism Mission framework.

The meeting focused on preparatory work for a joint thematic paper titled “Beyond Projects: Institutionalizing Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism Practices in the Mediterranean.” Through collaborative discussion, participating projects explored approaches, key themes, and strategies to ensure that biodiversity protection and sustainable tourism practices move beyond individual project lifespans and become embedded in Mediterranean institutional frameworks.

Building on Collective Knowledge

Together with other cluster members, ECO-SEAROUTES contributed feedback on innovative tools, strategies, and solutions developed across different Euro-MED actions—from eco-nautical route management to community-based heritage approaches that demonstrate how tourism can protect rather than threaten natural resources.

Looking Ahead

This collaborative effort feeds into the broader Sustainable Tourism Mission activities, including the upcoming III MED Sustainable Tourism Convention (18-19 June 2026, Barcelona), which will bring together approximately 250 stakeholders to showcase sustainable tourism practices and results from across the Mediterranean.

By working collectively through the MED Cluster, projects are building the evidence base and policy recommendations needed to institutionalize sustainable practices at regional and national levels—ensuring that Mediterranean biodiversity and responsible tourism thrive together for generations to come.
